[x] A Library's a Good Place to Hide Your Secrets - Vid Rec: Toy Story trilogy: Infinity and Beyond by decor_noctis Oh gosh, you guys. If you loved the Toy Story movies even half as much as I did, if Toy Story 3 owned your soul and dragged you back into this 'mythology' for one last wild ride with a smile on your face like it seemed to do to so many this summer, then you simply must watch this fanvid. Must. You must. You. Must. There seems to be a lot of vidding to Kesha*, especially "Tik Tok", going around these days. Which makes sense: catchy fast-paced songs like these make for excellant vidding fodder if you can get the timing right. And this one does, but how. In fact I'd venture to say it's the best one I've seen thus far. It manages to keep the fast pace and use the beats and audio keys right, never growing repetitive despite only having so many scenes to draw from. There are some really precious uses of image/lyric matching, and overall the whole thing just makes me smile like crazy and bounce a little in my seat. You can probably tell if you look really hard for it, but on casual watch I can't specifically notice the inevitable difference in animation quality between clips from the different movies either; an excellant job is done blending them all seemlessly together. It reads as one fast-paced, fun, rollicking adventure of this lively crew of beloved characters. Really, if anything, the perfect tribute to the movies, and the showcase display of how well-done this vid really is, comes in the emotional 360 it spins me into: going from the giggly happiness and broad smiles of about 1:33 on, to the sudden heartwrench at 2:10, and then just when I think I can't take it anymore at 2:40 I'm laughing all over again.

[x] scc_reloaded | Vid rec: Howl by beccatoria: Howl Vidder: beccatoria Vidder's Summary: The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound: I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground. Characters/Pairings: Jesse/Derek, Jesse/Riley Recced because: This is really a Jesse character study, told through the contrast between the relatively shiny present and the bleak future, and the corresponding contrast between the love on the surface and the dark, violent undersides of her relationships with Derek and Riley. The vid melds those relationships with Jesse's mission to make her motivations for her own fight for a different future seem desperately immediate as it all unravels against the backdrop of the way it happened once already.

[x] renay: Fanwork Recs: FFVIII, FFX/X-2, Heathers, Inception: Heathers: Still Alive by anonymous - Knowing Portal, even tangentially, helps make this vid hilarious. I mean, it would have been great otherwise, too, but the additional knowledge of the video game song that's being covered just ranks it up there. I want to repeat everything franzeska said about it. It's all true. Til you run out of CAKE! KJ pointed out the vid was missing some lyrics (doesn't detract from the vid at all and probably a good decision), but it made me go find the full song, which is also funny! :D That said, I really recommend Portal. It is an awesome game! Sequel this year! :D Then you can rewatch this vid again and grin all over again for different reasons. (Veronica, J.D.)

[x] Howling at the Sky - "What's he gonna do, not let me back in?": The Rules of Parenting (Modern Family) - Super funny and touching and a stellar use on dialogue. O Death (The Book of Eli) - Holy crap this is fantastic. Gorgeously done and so moody. Wonderful use of a great song. State of Confusion (The Big Lebowski) - This is a GENIUS song/movie combination. Very funny vid. You probably don't need to have seen the movie to enjoy it, either. Untitled (Pulp Fiction) - I don't know if you've need to have seen the movie to see this vid, either, but it probably helps. Although I've only seen Pulp Fiction once, and that was years ago, and I still left the world's longest comment to this vid gushing over how amazing it is, so. Seriously - the craft and intention and technique that just oozes out of every acid-dripped pore of this vid is impressive. (It's Quentin Tarantino, so assume a warning here for violence, blood, drugs, and sex.)

[x] kyriacarlisle | Festivids Recs: pt. 1: O Death (The Book of Eli) I've never seen the source; everything I know about the canon I've gathered from this vid. I'm recommending it for two reasons. First, it's gorgeously cut - you know how there are those vids that hit every beat of the music and every transition between shots so well that you just sit there thinking "yes. yes. yes"? This is one of them. And second, about that music: perfect choice. I think a lot of us know one or another of the traditional versions of "O Death," from the soundtracks of O Brother Where Art Thou? or Songcatcher, if nothing else. This is the familiar Ralph Stanley version, intertwined with voiceover and a metrically-creepy, synthesized version by Jen Titus. It's slippery Appalachian improvisation cranked up to eleven: the musical echo of the post-apocalyptic landscape. Angels Would Fall (Deadwood) I am known to say of Deadwood that I both despise it and think it's brilliant. This exploration of Jane and Joanie is everything I hated and admired about the original: it's full of dust and hopelessness and people who are destroying themselves...and then they'll suddenly turn and do something so amazingly, selflessly human that my heart almost can't stand it.

[x] kaliflower | Vid Recs: giandujakiss pointed out a sweet TOS vid done to "What About Everything" by Carbon Leaf. It mixes both the series and the movies to make a vid that inspires that feeling of d'awwww and squee. A feeling that is particularly fannish for me. It also totally reminded me of calapine's Doctor Who vid "What About Everything" done to, you guessed it, the same song. I really love this vid because it focuses so much on all the Doctors, not just the new ones, and the lyrics fit the clips very well. If you know the context of the clips there are layers of meaning to each clip. That's an amazing feat. Especially with a song choice so dense in lyrics and a canon choice that spans 40 years. And because I can, you should also watch the multi-Doctor vid "Take on Me" by greensilver. It focuses a bit more on the 9, 10, and 11th (Eleven's included! Squee!) Doctors, but it features all of the regenerations nicely. It also has two sequences that I adore: companions finding the TARDIS for the first time and the Doctor's regenerations. What she did with the musical bridge is also like a mini-master class in what to do with lyric-less parts of a song to move a vid forward.

[x] I Pray For Inspiration And A Way I Cannot See - Vid Rec: What About Everything (Sanctuary): So there's this vid. And it's not really full of effects or clever tricks to manipulate the story. The song isn't jumpy and heavy on the beats, making the cuts seem more interesting than they actually are. It's simple and deceptively easy looking, in fact. But this vid...this vid is freaking awesome. It's awesome because it's a song I've never heard and now can't imagine anything better. It's awesome because the vidder captures Helen Magnus from every possible side, and AT's ability to play her laughing, crying, angry, happy, and ready to take over the world. The clip selection is still blowing my mind (I've only watched it all the way through three times, so things are still jumping out). The thought that went into this, you guys...is just AWESOME. What About Everything, by friendshipper: Helen Magnus, her life and her team, in three and a half minutes.

[x] counteragent - I just can't stop watching this adorable Toy Story vid: Tic Toc by Dogstar aka decor_noctis It makes me cheer and chokes me up a little. And chair dance. And I kind of loathe Ke$ha, so.
[x] thingswithwings | I am returned: Don't Walk Away, Psych, Gus/Shawn. SO ADORABLE! I had longed for a Gus/Shawn vid to some ridiculo-mazing eighties tune, and this vid delivered. What's especially awesome about it is that it's an old-school slash vid with a PLOT and an argument about CHARACTERIZATION, which was really cool - and I think what it says about Shawn is a kind of refreshing (and very believable!) take on the character and his relationship to Gus. Steer, Tipping the Velvet, Nan-centric. What a beautiful character vid for Nan! I was so lucky as to receive TWO Tipping the Velvet vids, and even luckier in that they're both great while being very different kinds of vids. Steer is a bit melancholy, a bit joyous, and all about Nan's journey and her realisation that she can control her life and make decisions, not just be buffeted around by fate. It's a gorgeous introduction to the story (both the book and the miniseries) if you've never read/watched it before. And if you have read/watched it, it's a gorgeous meditation on the character and her development through the series. Is it just me or were there a lot of great character-study vids this year? The Party, Tipping the Velvet, hot lady makeouts-centric. OH my gosh I love this vid so much. I could just watch it forever. And I think I have my suspicions about who made it, because this kind of awesome can only come from a limited number of people. I had requested an anachronistic song choice to go with this source, and this is just PERFECT - I love the fast, clever editing that matches the video to the song, I love the whole concept (Florence is the afterparty! YES!) and I love how much fun the whole thing is. Basically it's the perfect complement to Steer, as it's not so much about deep and meaningful character journeys as it's about amazingly hot crossdressing and lady makeouts - so between those two vids, everything I love about Tipping the Velvet is covered.
